Llanelli AFC will begin life back in the Cymru South without two of their key players after confirming the departures of Danny Williams and Joe Hopkins. The Reds were relegated from the Cymru Premier after a difficult one-season stay in the top flight. They finished bottom of the table, ending the campaign 19 points behind nearest rivals Bala Town. As preparations continue for the 2025-26 season, Llanelli have confirmed that both Williams and Hopkins will be leaving Stebonheath Park. The club announced Hopkins’ departure in a statement, paying tribute to the midfielder’s contribution during his time with the Reds. It read: “His leadership, professionalism, and passion for the club have been invaluable, and he leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Llanelli Town AFC. “On behalf of the club, we would like to wish Joe every success and happiness for the future.” Hopkins made more than 125 appearances for Llanelli Town and was a key figure both on and off the pitch. Meanwhile, Williams announced his departure via Instagram. The former Cardiff City academy player and ex-Merthyr Town forward established himself as one of Llanelli’s standout performers over the past two seasons. He scored 11 goals during the club’s Cymru South title-winning campaign before adding a further six goals in the Cymru Premier last season despite the club’s relegation. “Not what I originally thought would be happening before the new season, but that’s football…,” said Williams in a social media post. “Very unpredictable. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Llanelli Town through the highest of highs and even the lowest of the lows. I wish the club nothing but the best.” The departures leave Llanelli facing a significant rebuilding job as they look to mount a promotion challenge in the Cymru South next season.
